GMC - Year 1

The teaching behind the GMC is centred around a self-directed "problem based" methodology. By self-directed, I mean that students are largely dependent on themselves to find and prioritise the collection, analysis and use of information and resources. That is, the majority of the course is not taught in a didactic manner, through the usual regime of lectures and prac sessions. It is more that relevant resources are provided, which the students can use at will.

By problem based, I mean that the principles and skills taught are taught in the context of a real-life case. There is not so much emphasis placed upon problem solving or the solution. The focus is on the methods of analyzing and working through a problem. Its all about forming hypotheses based upon cues and testing those hypotheses through the process of taking a history, performing a physical examination and analyzing investigations. It is the much the same as what a doctor would do in the course of a consultation, and is intended to be so. [an error occurred while processing this directive]
